OriGen Bladder Box

The OriGen Bladder Box is a functional replacement for the ECMO
bladder box originally marketed by Seabrook. It is designed to
support the SciMed/Avecor/MedtronicTM R-14 or R-38 silicone bladder
used as the venous reservoir in ECLS procedures. The OriGen Bladder
Box senses the diameter of the bladder, and switches on an alarm
if the bladder volume drops below a user-adjustable set point.
Two non-electric versions are also available,
the Bladder
Carrier , just the same size as the Bladder
Box, but without the electronics, and the Bladder
Holder, a very low profile bladder support. Both
of these devices share the same rugged construction and durability
as the bladder box. Click on these highlighted links or the buttons
above for more information on those devices.
Electronics
The original Seabrook bladder box also included a separate
electronics box. That electronics box contained a number of relays,
which
switched the ECLS pump on and off. The OriGen Bladder Box
contains only two switches and an internal alarm circuit. One
of the
internal switches is cabled out and may be connected to an
external pump controller, a secondary alarm system, or the
level sensor inputs of many pumps. The other internal switch
triggers an alarm and flashing lamp when the bladder volume
drops below the user set point. This alarm can be silenced
by switching the unit to the 'OFF' position, or will go off
automatically when the bladder re-inflates. At the same time,
the switch for the remotely cabled alarm changes state, signaling
the remote alarm or pump stop, if connected.
Adjustable Set Point
The set point at which the alarm triggers is easily
adjustable by the user. A captive screw at the rear of the system adjusts
the position of the switch carrier. The user fills the bladder
to the desired volume or pressure point, and turns the captive
screw to make the system trigger at that point.
Durability
Except for the clear front plate, the origen biomedical bladder
box is made completely of rugged Delrin Acetal polymer. Delrin
is extremely tough and resistant to most acids, bases and
strong cleaners. The rubber diaphragm on the Origen bladder box
is
mounted from the inside, and sealed in place with silicone.
Slippage or leaking of the bladder box diaphragm are greatly
reduced. For convenience, the Origen bladder box is bolted
together, both for strength and easy part replacement.
Bladder Mounting
Mounting
the bladder The Bladder Box has improved saddles for easy
and secure ECMO bladder mounting, and is shown in the photo
to the left. For the 3/8" R-38 bladder, a 'Panduit'
tie strap is placed over the connector near each end, and
the bladder is put in place. Each of the saddles for mounting
a bladder has a hole for receiving a securing tie strap.
The tie strap is placed through the hole and secured across
the top of the connector, as shown in this enlarged detail.
In this way, the interior tie strap prevents leaks, and
the saddle tie strap secures the connector in place with
some freedom of movement.

For the 1/4" R-14 bladder, the user clips a 3/4" length
of ½"x3/8" PVC tubing as a shim, splits
the tubing, and slips it over the end of the bladder, beyond
the connector, as shown. A tie strap is then placed through
the saddle, and over the tubing shim as shown in the last
photo mounting the 1/4 inch bladder .
