News & Insights

Austin, TX, September 2020 – Richard Martin, Founder of OriGen Biomedical, has been inducted into the “Fellowship of the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization” (FELSO) for his professional contributions to the advancement of the extracorporeal support community. In the history of the FELSO organization, Richard is the first non-clinician to have ever received this honor.

The FELSO induction award has been a tradition within the ECMO community for the last five years. It is an honor bestowed on select physicians, nurses, perfusionists, therapists, and researchers who have provided distinctive contributions to the global art and science of extracorporeal support delivery. Election to FELSO identifies global recognition of those who have advanced the field in diverse and lasting ways.

Richard founded OriGen Biomedical in 1997 after realizing the market need for a neonatal double lumen cannula.  For over a decade OriGen was the sole global manufacturer of this product while continuing to develop lifesaving products used to support the ECMO community. Richard received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M University.  He began his career as a Navigator with the Electronic Warfare Office of the United States Air Force, receiving 2100+ flying/combat hours during the Vietnam War.  He received his MBA from Pepperdine University and is a Registered Mechanical Engineer and Certified Quality Engineer.

“I’m both stunned and honored.  I’d like to thank the committee and all the members of ELSO who made this possible. It’s a privilege to me to have been a part of the ECMO community for the last 25 years.” – Richard Martin, Founder of OriGen Biomedical
