National Cancer Research Month: One Mission. One Voice.

News & Insights

Each May, we observe National Cancer Research Month — a time to honor the progress made and the people who make it possible. Researchers, doctors, patients, caregivers, and advocates worldwide share a single goal: to end cancer through the power of science and collaboration.

Breakthroughs That Save Lives

The impact of cancer research is undeniable. Since 1991, cancer death rates in the U.S. have dropped by 33%, translating to roughly 3.8 million lives saved thanks to new therapies, early detection, and deeper scientific understanding.[1] These numbers reflect more than just progress — they represent milestones reached and loved ones held close.

Childhood Cancer: From Hopeless to Hopeful

For children, the journey has been especially transformative. Childhood cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease for kids under 14. However, when St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital opened its doors in 1962, survival rates were just 20%.[2] Today, that number exceeds 80%, and St. Jude’s commitment is unwavering: to ensure that no child dies from cancer.

The Work Is Not Done

Despite tremendous progress, the urgency remains. The National Cancer Institute estimates that over 618,000 Americans will die from cancer in 2025. For many, a diagnosis still brings fear, confusion, and a sense of helplessness. But research is a beacon of hope, driving forward the treatments of tomorrow and bringing light into the darkest moments.[3]

How You Can Make a Difference

Research advances because people care — and take action. You can support cancer research in meaningful ways:[2]

  • Donate to leading institutions and organizations that help push cancer research forward
  • Share uplifting patient stories to spread hope
  • Fundraise for cancer research and encourage others to join
  • Advocate for increased funding and awareness
  • Stay informed on the latest discoveries

No matter how small, every action helps propel us toward a cancer-free future.

Join the Movement

This year’s theme — United by Cancer Research: One Mission. One Voice. — reflects the collective strength behind every breakthrough.[1] This May, let’s unite in our support for the lifesaving power of science. Whether you donate, share a story, or raise your voice, you are shaping a future where cancer is not a life sentence, but a conquerable challenge.

Together, we’re not just observing a month—we’re building momentum. We can create a world without cancer with continued dedication, compassion, and unity.
