World Blood Cancer Day 2025

News & Insights

On May 28th, the global community unites to observe World Blood Cancer Day (WBCD), raising awareness about blood cancers and supporting those affected by these life-altering diseases. This day serves as a reminder of our collective strength and the ongoing efforts to combat blood cancers.

Understanding Blood Cancer

Blood cancer encompasses a range of malignancies that affect the blood, bone marrow, and lymphatic system, including leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. These cancers disrupt the normal production and function of blood cells, impairing the body’s ability to fight infections, transport oxygen, and prevent bleeding.

In the United States, approximately every three minutes, someone is diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma. Collectively, these diseases account for about 9.4% of all new cancer cases, highlighting the significant impact of blood cancers on public health.[1]

The Power of Unity

The red ampersand (&) represents the connection and solidarity among patients, families, donors, and supporters worldwide and is the true icon of World Blood Cancer Day. On this day, landmarks are illuminated in red, and individuals share stories and messages of hope to honor those affected by blood cancer.[2]

Organizations play a crucial role in this movement, encouraging people to register as potential blood stem cell donors. With over 10 million registered donors, the collective effort continues to grow, offering hope to patients needing life-saving transplants.[3]

Advancements in Treatment: Hope for the Future

In recent years, significant progress has been made in treating blood cancers, particularly with the advancement of CAR T-cell therapy. This innovative approach involves modifying a patient’s T-cells to recognize and attack cancer cells.[4]

CAR T-cell therapy has shown remarkable success in treating certain types of blood cancers, such as relapsed or refractory B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Moreover, ongoing research explores its potential in treating multiple myeloma and other hematologic malignancies. [5]

OriGen Biomedical is honored to support CAR T technology and help turn cancer patients into survivors. We are proud to be recognized as the industry-preferred choice for single-use disposables within cell and gene therapy, including CAR T therapy. At OriGen, we believe that our primary responsibility is to the patients. We offer various medical devices successfully employed to treat blood cancers throughout the CAR-T process. Our CryoStore Freezing Bags are used for storage and transportation. PermaLife® Cell Culture Bags grow the cells to the desired amount for each patient. Once manufactured, the final cell product is stored in a CryoStore Freezing Bag and cryopreserved with CryoPur™ Solutions. Various accessories, like our manifold sets, can be used for open- and closed-system processing. To learn more about CAR T therapy, visit our dedicated blog post here.

Making a Difference

Becoming a blood stem cell donor is a profound way to contribute to the fight against blood cancer. Individuals between the ages of 18 and 55 and in good health can register to become potential donors, offering a second chance at life to patients in need.[3]

Every new registrant increases the likelihood of finding a matching donor for patients worldwide. By joining the registry, you could be the match that saves a life—a powerful testament to the impact one person can have. Join the Movement

As we observe World Blood Cancer Day 2025, let us reaffirm our shared commitment to ending blood cancer through awareness, support, and action. OriGen Biomedical is proud to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) in the fight against these life-threatening diseases.

We recently completed Big Climb Austin, an event that brings communities together to raise awareness and support for blood cancer research and patient support. And we’re not stopping there—OriGen is excited to participate in Light The Night later this year, walking alongside patients, families, and supporters to bring light to the darkness of cancer.

Whether you register as a stem cell donor, donate, or join an event, you can make a difference. Keep an eye out for more ways to get involved and support this vital cause. Together, we are stronger. Together, we stand united against blood cancer!
